We went to Oslob in 2014. It was a phenomenal experience but at the same time, it felt a bit wrong as these amazing animals were coming up like a domesticated pet looking for a handout. We also dove Moalboal and Pescador Island. While we didn’t get to see the school of sardines, we had a whaleshark visit us for about an hour. It was obviously one that was used to being fed as it nudged a few of the smaller boats looking for a handout.
There is a lot of pressure from the Philippine Government to shut down the feedings in Oslob. However, my concern is that forcing the people of Oslob to turn to other ways of earning money might force them to start killing these sharks for their fins. Right now, at least the sharks stay alive and the people can earn a living.
